Alabama Crimson Tide news and notes from the weekend.
Alabama falls 20-17 to Georgia in controversial fashion
Saturday night's matchup against Georgia in Tuscaloosa didn't have the Hollywood ending that Alabama fans hoped for. The Crimson Tide missed plenty of opportunities in a 20-17 loss to the Bulldogs, but Kirby Smart's team got a major assist from the officials, too.
The missed pass interference on a pass from Keelon Russell to Rico Scott in the endzone on Alabama's last possession of the game was the icing on the poorly baked cake. The officials from that game shouldn't work another game, and the SEC should be embarrassed that the biggest game of the regular season was spoiled by incompetent officials.
Alabama fell to 5-1 with the loss and will now look to refocus and get ready for a pivotal road matchup at Tennessee this weekend.
In spite of the loss, the opinion of Kalen DeBoer within the fanbase took a dramatic shift toward the positive. His sideline fire was something Alabama fans had been waiting to see, and it felt like, halfway through year three, he officially became our coach.
Ryan Coleman-Williams, Racin Delgatty, and Terrance Green all suffer injuries vs. Georgia
The loss to Georgia proved to be consequential on the injury front. Three key starters, Ryan Coleman-Williams, Racin Delgatty, and Terrance Green, all went down with injuries.
Coleman-Williams was knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter with an assumed concussion on a pretty clear targeting penalty on Georgia that, of course, was missed. His status for this week against Tennessee will be very much in question, and it's probably best to assume Alabama will make the trip to Tennessee without its junior captain.
Racin Delgatty suffered a lower-body injury on Alabama's final offensive snap. His status is unknown at this time, but DeBoer should have an update on Monday during his usual press conference. If he can't go, expect Mal Waldrep to slide into the starting center spot even with Casey Poe listed as the backup on the depth chart.
Terrance Green went down with an injury near the end of the first half and didn't return. DeBoer called it a re-aggravation of an injury from the previous week. Alabama's defense struggled to stop the run without Green in the second half. He's one of the Tide's most key players on the defensive line, and he will hopefully be able to get back on the field in Knoxville.
Alabama holds steady in AP, Coaches' Polls despite loss to Georgia
In terms of Alabama's national standing, the loss to Georgia was inconsequential. Alabama remained No. 6 in the AP Poll and No. 7 in the Coaches Poll despite a three-point home defeat by the Bulldogs.
Even in the loss, Alabama proved to the nation that it was one of the top teams in the country, one capable of contending for the national title. Losing sucks, but it was proof of concept for DeBoer and his team.
So long as they are able to bounce back and avoid a second straight loss this week at Tennessee, the loss to Georgia will not have much of an impact on the Crimson Tide's standing in the SEC or College Football Playoff race.
Alabama softball beats Northeast Alabama CC 11-1 in first fall ball matchup
Patrick Murphy and Alabama softball opened their first of five fall ball events on Sunday afternoon with an 11-1 win over Northeast Alabama Community College.
Alabama's offense recorded four home runs across 10 innings of play. Freshmen Ava Bush and Paige Stanfield homered in their Alabama debuts, and they were joined by Brooke Wells, and Gerritt Griggs, who hit an inside-the-park homer.
Jocelyn Briski faced six batters and struck them all out. Kaitlyn Pallozzi threw thre innings and matched Briski with six strikeouts.
The softball team will be back on the field on Saturday in Tuscaloosa for a double header against Jones College and West Alabama.
