Alabama Crimson Tide news and notes:

Alabama football has the mindset of the playoff already starting

Coming off an embarrassing loss in Knoxville, Alabama lost any margin for error it had left in the College Football Playoff race. After a 5-0 start, the Crimson Tide has now lost back-to-back games to fall to 5-2 and is limping into this weekend's matchup against Texas A&M before a much-needed bye week.

If nothing else, Alabama players are taking the right mentality heading into this week and the rest of the season. They seem to understand that there's no time to waste and that, effectively, the College Football Playoff has already started for them. Round one is this Saturday against the Aggies.

Both Ivan Taylor and Marshall Pritchett talked about that after practice on Tuesday.

Ryan Grubb took accountability for Alabama's recent offensive shortcomings

Ryan Grubb is not a popular man in the state of Alabama. A lot of Crimson Tide fans are disappointed and frustrated with his play-calling, particularly after the offense mustered just 201 yards and 10 points last weekend in Knoxville.

To Grubb's credit, he didn't run from it or deflect blame on Monday during his weekly press conference. He owned it.

"More questions than answers right now, and it starts with me," Grubb said during his weekly press conference. "I thought I had a good game plan. This isn't a point-the-finger-at-the-kids sort of day. I thought I had them ready, and I didn't.

"It's embarrassing. If I was a fan or supporter, I'd be pissed off too."

Whether or not anything changes, we'll see this weekend. But he took the first step forward on Monday.

Alabama basketball is ranked No. 20 in the preseason AP Top 25

Nate Oats and Alabama basketball will open the season ranked No. 20 in the preseason AP Poll, which was released on Monday. It's the lowest preseason ranking for Alabama in three years.

Alabama was ranked No. 24 to open the 2023-24 season before it made the first Final Four in program history.

Oats and his team are flying under the radar a bit entering the season, which is just fine for everyone involved. There's a quiet confidence inside the program that this is a team capable of getting back to the Final Four.

Brandon Miller signs massive rookie scale contract extension with the Charlotte Hornets

Former Alabama basketball star Brandon Miller agreed to a 5-year, $209 million rookie-scale contract extension with the Charlotte Hornets this week. It's the biggest contract for a former Alabama basketball player ever.

Miller and the Hornets agreed to the deal just before the start of his fourth NBA season. The former SEC Player of the Year and No. 2 overall pick is coming off a season in which he averaged over 20 points per game and shot a career-high 38% from three.
