Alabama Crimson Tide news and notes from the weekend.

Ty Simpson balls out in his preseason NFL debut

Alabama fans got to watch Ty Simpson play football for the first time in seven months. They got to watch a healthy Ty Simpson play football for the first time in much longer than that.

The former Crimson Tide quarterback got into the Rams' first preseason game on Saturday for the third possession and played the rest of the way. He went 21-of-25 for 190 yards and two touchdowns while leading Los Angeles to a 20-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Simpson looked poised and in command of the offense, displaying all the skills that led the franchise to pull the trigger on him at No. 13 overall despite having reigning MVP Matthew Stafford firmly entrenched as the starting QB.

Simpson's performance could give him a leg up on former UGA QB Stetson Bennett in the competition to be Stafford's backup in 2026.

Alabama dealing with some injuries during fall camp

Alabama has a handful of injuries it is dealing with in fall camp right now.

Both Lotzeir Brooks and EJ Crowell are dealing with minor issues that held them out of the first scrimmage of fall camp last Thursday, but Kalen DeBoer noted that neither should miss any game time. That's good news, but for Crowell's sake, the missed practice time is tough for a freshman who needs as many reps as he can get.

The news isn't as positive for AK Dear and Jorden Edmonds.

Dear, a rising sophomore RB who was having a terrific camp, suffered an ankle injury during Thursday's scrimmage and is expected to miss roughly six weeks. That would put his return timeline near the end of September or early October, likely costing him the first three or four games of the season. With Crowell also banged up, the RB room is looking thin as the season-opener approaches.

Edmonds, a 5-star CB recruit in the 2026 class, suffered a lower-body injury in practice ahead of the scrimmage and is expected to miss a few weeks. Fortunately, cornerback is one of Alabama's deepest positions on the roster, but Edmonds is expected to be one of the Crimson Tide's top backups when he is healthy.

Alabama soccer snaps a 41-game streak for Memphis

Alabama soccer earned a pivotal early-season win on Saturday, going on the road and knocking off No. 21 Memphis 2-1. The Tigers rarely lose at home. In fact, the Crimson Tide's win snapped a 41-game home winning streak for Memphis.

Alabama earned the win on a late match stunner. Tied 1-1 with time ticking under 10 seconds, Melina Rebimas sent the ball into the box on a set piece, and Avery Brown headed it into the back of the net to give the Crimson Tide the win:

Larkin Thomason scored the first goal of the game for Alabama on a penalty kick in the 28th minute.

Up next for Wes Hart's team is a big-time matchup in Tuscaloosa against No. 6 TCU on Thursday.
