5-star safety Jireh Edwards suffered an injury in practice on Monday that required surgery. Though it was initially reported not to be season-ending, the expectation was that it would still cause him to miss some significant time.
That seems to have been premature.
Per CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, Edwards did have to undergo surgery to repair the arm injury, but there's optimism that the 5-star defensive back will return for Alabama early in the season:

Jireh Edwards should be back soon for Alabama after arm injury in practice
Edwards himself hinted at the good news earlier on Tuesday via his X account. If the injury becomes a pain tolerance thing, it's pretty clear that the star freshman is prepared to play through it:

Even in a crowded safety room, Edwards had positioned himself for playing time on Alabama's defense. Kane Wommack praised him last week, calling him "one of the most instinctive playmakers I've ever seen coming out of high school."
Edwards is going to have a role defensively, and will likely be a core special-teams player in year one for the Crimson Tide.
The 5-star has had an impressive camp leading into the season, and the injury he suffered was a challenging blow for Alabama and for him personally. But the Crimson Tide seemingly got some good news on that front on Tuesday, and Edwards could be back in the lineup a lot sooner than originally expected, though there's still no official timetable for his return.
Recovery time is always shorter for upper body injuries than lower, and we've seen plenty of defensive players play through injury while wearing bulky casts and braces on their arms over the years.
Both of Alabama's 5-star defensive back signings in the 2026 recruiting class are battling injury in the preseason, but both appear set to return sooner rather than later. Prior to the first scrimmage, 5-star CB Jorden Edmonds suffered an injury that will force him to miss a few weeks, but he shared a positive message on social media on Monday night that points to his return to the field quickly.
Alabama has plenty of depth in the secondary, but Edwards and Edmonds are quality backups who were in line for at least small roles as freshmen. It's a positive development that it doesn't seem like either is going to miss too much of the season.
Hopefully, Alabama can get the rest of the way through the preseason with no added injury issues.
