Alabama's in-state issues for Kalen DeBoer keep getting overblown for no good reason

Kalen DeBoer's struggles of recruiting in-state says more about Alabama than the program itself.

Whatever becomes of Kalen DeBoer's latest recruiting class, it is not expected to be chock full of homegrown talent. While Alabama definitely has work to do to improve from 34th overall and 13th in the SEC, the Crimson Tide are not going to be getting the bulk of their guys from The Yellowhammer State. There are reasons for this, resulting in a not-so-perfect storm for Alabama in this cycle.

Of Rivals' top 20 prospects from Alabama, the only player committed to the Crimson Tide for 2027 is three-star quarterback Trent Seaborn (No. 12 Alabama). With one player after another committed to programs like Auburn, Miami, and Oklahoma, Alabama fans should be worried, right? Not so fast... DeBoer has continuously made it a point to say this will be a smaller class for Alabama than normal.

It did not stop Bill Landis riling up fear in the Alabama fanbase to look at who DeBoer is not recruiting.

Of the top 20 recruits in-state, the only real misses for Alabama were Jatori Williams (Miami), Isaac McNeil (Auburn), with Junio Tu'upo (Texas) standing as a miss as well just outside at No. 21 in-state. Prospects like McNeil, JaBarrius Garror (Texas), Gunner Rivers (NC State), and Deshawn Hall (Auburn) all have perfectly good explanations why they are not heading to their home state's flagship program.

McNeil got crossed up in the Kenneth Simon II debacle. Alabama prioritized Simon over McNeil, only for the Tennessee legacy to commit to his father Kevin Simon's Volunteers. Garror had positional fit issues with Alabama. Williams wanted more early playing time. Alabama liked Hall, but preferred Osani Gayles. Rivers never really had an offer since he was always going to play for his father's alma mater.

This does not excuse everything, but Alabama always had a plan to look elsewhere for 2027 recruits.

Kalen DeBoer can silence Alabama critics by winning with his type of guys

Without question, the biggest thing DeBoer can do in this recruiting cycle is to be consistent with his messaging. If he continues to harp up the fact this will be a smaller class, then it needs to be one. If he wants to go all-in on high-character players, regardless of where they hail from or how many stars are next to their name, then he should do that. It will make things much easier for him to defend later on.

In most years, Alabama would have definitely cleaned up in-state. However, DeBoer and his staff can only recruit and develop what each class provides them. From the early looks of it, this is one of the weaker recruiting offers the state of Alabama has put forth in many recent cycles. Because DeBoer does not have deeply entrenched roots in the state, it does make it easier for him to recruit nationally.

Overall, there is no denying that DeBoer is entering a critical season at Alabama. He narrowly missed the College Football Playoff in Year 1, but made it in Year 2. After winning a first-round game to avenge the Oklahoma home loss at their place, it is all about taking the next step forward, regardless of who is and is not on the roster. It is about buy-in and belief. DeBoer seems to have it.

Ultimately, Alabama hired DeBoer because of his inherent steadiness. He may not be from the south, but his demeanor should allow him to ride out the ebbs and flows of coaching in the SEC. DeBoer is an adept offensive mind. He hires smart people. More importantly, the guys who want to play for him give their all for him between the lines. In time, maybe those roots will fully establish across Alabama?

For now, his in-state struggles seem to be more about the product he is being tasked to sort through.
