Alabama makes final 3 for blue chip 2027 DB but has a lot of ground to make up

An early commitment date for a 4-star safety might not be good news for Kalen DeBoer and Alabama.

Alabama added a commitment from 4-star LB Kenneth Simon II on Monday to gain some momentum heading into the official visit season that gets started in earnest at the end of this month over Memorial Day Weekend.

Could Alabama gain another?

4-star safety Tavares Harrington from Chicago announced on Monday that he was down to three schools - Alabama, Michigan, and Notre Dame - and that he would be committing to a school on May 22nd:

Tavares Harrington's early commitment is probably bad news for Alabama

Harrington has an official visit scheduled for Alabama on June 19th, but he will now make his commitment announcement about a month before that. Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide have been in a good position with Harrington throughout his recruitment, but this date popping up out of the blue before Alabama could get him on campus for his official isn't likely to be good news.

Once considered an Alabama-Notre Dame battle for the Mount Carmel product, there has been a lot of smoke pouring in recently about Michigan, and it looks like the Wolverines have the momentum heading into his commitment date next week.

While it would be an unfortunate miss for the Tide's staff, the safety spot is the least of DeBoer and Kane Wommack's worries for the future. Even with Alabama set to lose both starters in Bray Hubbard and Keon Sabb following the season, guys like Zay Mincey, Ivan Taylor, Dre Kirkpatrick Jr., and Jireh Edwards are next in line. The cupboards are pretty well stocked at the position in Tuscaloosa.

If Harrington ultimately commits elsewhere, Alabama can pivot to other targets at the position, like in-state product Junior Tu'upo, Gideon Gash, and MJ Burnett.

Landing an Edwards-type 5-star in this class probably won't happen - and Harrington wouldn't represent that, either - but there's still some talented players out there for Alabama to add to its incredibly talented safety room.
