If you follow recruiting in any capacity, you probably know about 5-star WR Monshun Sales from Indianapolis. Sales is an Alabama native and grew up a massive fan of the Crimson Tide, even earning the nickname "Bama."
Once upon a time, his recruitment would have been a slam dunk for Alabama.
But this is a different era. With massive money being thrown away via NIL and revenue sharing, along with a new superpower in Bloomington, things are far less certain. For a long time, Alabama has been seen as the presumptive favorite in his recruitment. That has shifted in a major way in recent weeks.
Coming off his official visit to Indiana at the end of April, the defending national champion Hoosiers now appear to be running in the pole position. Recent predictions have come in that have swung the On3 RPM heavily in favor of Curt Cignetti and Indiana.
In fact, it appears that Texas may have overtaken Alabama and could be running in second after he took an unofficial visit to Austin. Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide appear to have a lot of ground to make up in Sales' recruitment.
Fortunately, it's far from over. And an upcoming date will give DeBoer and Alabama the swing at thep late it desperately needs. It might take a homerun to have a shot.
Monshun Sales' visit to Alabama on May 29th will be critical
Alabama sat in a good spot for Sales until he visited Indiana. The Crimson Tide will have a chance to swing the pendulum back in their favor over Memorial Day weekend when he comes in for his official visit.
Sales grew up dreaming of playing for the Crimson Tide. That still might matter, though if his recruitment comes down strictly to money, then he's going to end up elsewhere. Alabama will be competitive in the NIL space, but he'll get bigger offers from Texas and Indiana and the billionaire backers bankrolling their rosters.
DeBoer can certainly pitch success in developing wide receivers. And Sales won't have to worry about a revolving door of transfer quarterbacks and the bust rate that comes with that. Nobody is recruiting the quarterback position like Alabama right now.
Alabama will need to hit a home run during Sales' official visit two weeks from now. Fortunately, DeBoer, GM Courtney Morgan, and the rest of the staff have proven they can knock visits out of the park. They'll put their best foot forward with Sales, and whether that's good enough will remain to be seen.
Regardless of what happens, Sales will likely still take his scheduled officials to Miami, Ohio State, and Texas, and even if he walks out of Tuscaloosa trending toward the Crimson Tide again, the other three are heavy hitters and could sway him again.
Alabama will be fine at WR regardless of his decision, but missing on Sales would still represent a major disappointment. He's a special talent, and his ties to the Crimson Tide have made him a target Alabama fans desperately hope ends up at the Capstone.
