Austin Mack's true character continues to shine for Alabama amid disappointment

If you want to give someone an example of how to handle adversity and disappointment, look no further than how Austin Mack has handled himself since he learned that he wouldn't be Alabama's starting quarterback in 2026.

Keelon Russell was officially named the starter last Saturday. But if you looked at how Mack has conducted himself in the aftermath, you would swear that he won the job. Because nothing has changed with Mack's preparation or his leadership in the aftermath of the disappointment. He's been the same guy.

Kalen DeBoer noted that Mack was one of the first players in the facility on Sunday, just 24 hours after learning that he would be a backup for a fourth straight season. He was undoubtedly disappointed privately, but publicly Mack has remained the same great teammate he's always been.

And he's still acting as an ambassador for the program.

Mack sent a message to 2028 Alabama QB commit Charles Scott Jr. after practice on Thursday, wishing him good luck in his upcoming high school season opener:

Mack continues to handle himself with class and grace. You can tell that the University of Alabama still means something to him. He's still operating like the same guy, even after realizing his dream of being the starting quarterback here will likely never come true.

Mack will almost certainly jump into the Transfer Portal after the season to pursue starting options. With Russell being a true sophomore, barring something unforeseen, he'll be entrenched as Alabama's starter for at least the next two seasons. If Mack wants to start, he'll have to leave to do so.

But similar to Jalen Hurts, Mack will always be remembered fondly by Alabama fans for how he's handled himself amid the adversity and disappointment. You couldn't blame him for going off the grid and flying off the radar this year. It would be a human reaction to his situation.

Instead, Mack is still leading. He's still setting the table for the future of Alabama at the position.

Don't understate how much that means for Alabama's recruiting efforts. The Crimson Tide has a lot of talent coming into the QB room in the next couple of years. They have four committed prospects at QB in the 2027 and 2028 cycles combined. They also signed two quarterbacks in the 2026 class.

Any QB who joins Alabama's loaded quarterback room is going to have to sit before they get the opportunity to play. Mack is setting the example for them, a year after Ty Simpson finally got his opportunity to start, parlaying one strong season into being the No. 13 pick in the NFL Draft.

Mack may not be the Crimson Tide's starting QB, but he's still finding a way to make a significant impact that won't soon be forgotten.
