'Dream offer' leads to Alabama flipping a Tulane committed 2027 defensive lineman

3-star Kavarris "Duke" Duncan grew up a huge fan of Alabama. On Saturday, his dream came true. The Tulane commitment was on campus for a visit for the Crimson Tide's matchup against Florida State, and Kalen DeBoer extended an offer to him. Duncan couldn't hide his excitement:

It didn't take Duncan long to ruminate on the offer before he made the decision to flip his commitment from Tulane to Alabama. The Alpine, Alabama native committed to Tulane back in June, but it was only a matter of time once Alabama offered before he would decide to join the Tide's 2027 class. Duncan made his flip official on Sunday:

Duncan is listed at 6-foot-1 and 315 pounds. He's flown under the radar throughout his recruitment, but DeBoer, DC Kane Wommack, and DL coach Freddie Roach obviously saw something they liked on tape.

Duncan picked up his first Power Four offer at the beginning of the month when West Virginia got involved in his recruitment. But Alabama was always going to be the team to beat if they started recruiting him.

Duncan is the low-risk, high-reward type of upside swing you can make in this era of college football with roster limits at 105. He's likely going to be a scholarship-only guy, someone who costs Alabama none of its revenue-share or NIL dollars to add to the roster.

It'll be interesting to see if Duncan's flip changes anything with Alabama and Memphis commit Joshua Lane, who picked up an offer from the Crimson Tide this week and is also currently in Tuscaloosa on a visit. He was another guy on flip watch this weekend.

Alabama came into the weekend with only one defensive lineman committed in the 2027 class: 3-star AJ Pauley from Mobile.

Duncan is ranked as the No. 989 overall prospect in the composite rankings and the No. 117 defensive lineman. He might not move the needle much in terms of Alabama's class ranking, but DeBoer and GM Courtney Morgan have earned the benefit of the doubt on the upside swings they've taken with some under-recruited prospects. If they saw something they liked on tape, that's good enough for me at this point in time.

Duncan is Alabama's 15th commitment for a smaller-than-normal 2027 class. He's the exact type of "moneyball" prospect the Tide has been searching for in a class they don't want to invest too heavily in, with so much money earmarked for roster retention this offseason.
