Former 2027 5-star has elevated Nate Oats' Alabama roster after reclassification

As expected, Alabama got the roster news that had seemed inevitable.

From the moment 5-star 2027 guard Anderson Diaz committed to Alabama, it was rumored that he would be pursuing a reclass into the 2026 cycle to join the Crimson Tide's roster immediately.

On Monday, assistant coach Preston Murphy all but confirmed that the reclassification was going to happen by posting a video to his Twitter account that depicted someone of Diaz's likeness joining Alabama's practice.

On Tuesday, the news became official:

5-star 2027 guard Anderson Diaz is reclassifying into the 2026 class to join Alabama immediately

This is the second year in a row that Oats has bolstered the roster with a late reclassification. Last summer, it was done with the addition of big man Collins Onyejiaka, who was originally a 2026 prospect who joined the 2025 class to get to Alabama a year early. Unfortunately, a heart condition cost Onyejiaka the entirety of his freshman campaign in Tuscaloosa.

Diaz will hope to make a quick impact in Tuscaloosa, but the good news for Alabama is that he's not needed to.

His addition is pure luxury. Alabama already has Amari Allen and Aden Holloway returning in the backcourt, and 5-star freshman Qayden Samuels is a capable ball handler in his own right. If Diaz is overwhelmed by the jump in competition, then he'll have time to sit back and develop in the background.

But if Diaz can learn on the fly, he brings an intriguing set of skills that could force his way into action. At the very least, he becomes a strong contingency plan for Holloway, should the rising senior guard have any hiccups on his path back to the basketball court.

Diaz is a smooth lefty with a silky jumper. He can win off the dribble and get to the rim, something that is a staple of Oats' system. He's an obvious fit. Bama Online's Blake Byler posted a short video to Twitter showing the skill set:

In the 2027 composite rankings, Diaz was a 5-star and the No. 27 overall recruit in the country. He'll slip down the board a bit when he's added to the 2026 class, but he's still another blue-chip addition to a recruiting class that already featured two composite 5-stars (Samuels, Jaxon Richardson) and another 4-star in Tarris Bouie.

Time will tell how everyone translates, but there's an argument to be made that this class stacks up with any Oats has signed during his time in Tuscaloosa. All seem capable of making a quick impact, and their additions could be the launching point for a team capable of getting back to the Final Four.
