Kalen DeBoer and Alabama are quickly flipping the narrative from their struggles in the 2027 recruiting class. They are off to a fast start in the 2028 cycle, stacking blue-chip commitments.

Alabama currently holds the No. 1 class in the 2028 cycle with seven commitments. They've landed four commitments in July alone, including the latest coming Sunday afternoon when 4-star EDGE Tysir Young announced his pledge to the Crimson Tide.

Alabama's next major target may already be coming into focus.

Per On3/Rivals VP Steve Wiltfong, Alabama is one of three early contenders for another elite EDGE rusher.

4-star Cam Toomey from Saratoga Springs, New York, the No. 47 overall player in the composite for 2028 right now, has Alabama high on his list, alongside Tennessee and Penn State:

Alabama an early contender for 4-star 2028 EDGE Cam Toomey

Toomey has elite size as a rising high school junior. He's listed at 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds. He most likely projects as a Bandit in Kane Wommack's defensive system, assuming he continues to get bigger over the next couple of years.

Toomey has predictably drawn interest from some of the top programs in college football. Along with the current big three of Alabama, Tennessee, and Penn State, Toomey has listed scholarship offers from high-level programs such as Florida, Florida State, LSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oregon, among others.

Toomey probably isn't all that close to making a decision, but he would be another outstanding addition for the Tide's surging 2028 class.

The 2027 cycle has brought some angst among the Alabama fanbase with high-profile misses and the lowest recruiting ranking since online rankings became a thing. That's despite DeBoer's insistence throughout the process that this was going to be a smaller class that Alabama did not invest heavily in.

The rebound in 2028 will ease some anxiety, however. While there is a long time to go between now and the early signing period next December, it's a good sign that the Crimson Tide has gotten off to such a good start. DeBoer and GM Courtney Morgan are clearly eager to flip the narrative in this cycle, and they've gotten off to an exceptional start in doing so.

Alabama already holds commitments from four 4-star recruits in 2028. Along with Young, the Tide has QB Kingston Preyear, OL Anthony Blalock Jr., and CB Braylen Gibbs already in the boat.

It's been an unusually fast start for the Tide's staff, one that Alabama fans are hopeful will continue.
