Believe it or not, there may be method to the madness. When it comes to Kalen DeBoer's recruiting plans at Alabama ahead of year three, less appears to be more. Heading into the final weekend of May, Alabama only has six players committed in his 2027 recruiting class. That will all change in the coming weeks and months, but DeBoer made it a point to say this year's class will be much smaller.

He emphasized quality over quantity in recruitment during the SEC Spring Meetings earlier this week.

"It won't be a big group this fall. I think it will be much less than what we've had the last two seasons, but a lot of that is because we have retained well and brought in a group of transfers and have many seniors."

In the previous two recruiting cycles, Alabama had 27 players sign with them for 2026, and 21 commit to be part of DeBoer's first true Crimson Tide class in 2025. Since Alabama will not have a big senior class, it may not be all that important to land everyone under the sun out of high school for this year. It should be all about picking and choosing, such as prioritizing the likes of five-star Monshun Sales.

Here is everything DeBoer said at the podium regarding Alabama while at the SEC Spring Meetings.

This is why a big change in overall recruiting philosophy can be to the benefit of Alabama here soon.

Kalen DeBoer plans to win championships with his kinda guys at Alabama

This was always going to come to a head with DeBoer at the helm of this traditional power of a program. He won at a tremendously high level at Washington, Fresno State, and even Sioux Falls before coming to Tuscaloosa. DeBoer got complete and total buy-in from his players at each stop. His teams overachieved for their talent level, especially at Washington during his two seasons there.

So how is this going to work at Alabama when the plan in place for decades prior was four and five-stars beat three and four-stars, and not the other way around? Truth be told, this could totally blow up in his face, and Alabama could be looking for a new head coach at the end of the decade... That being said, Alabama is going to win under DeBoer by making sure all of his guys want to play here, for him...

The senior class was always going to be smaller in 2026 for a multitude of reasons. Players turn pro early. Others hit the portal. Not everyone who signed up to play for Nick Saban actively chose to keep on playing for DeBoer. It stings, but it is what it is... So where do we go from here? Make this thing a family again! It is kind of what helped Clemson become so dynastic under Dabo Swinney before NIL.

In the end, Alabama is already of the mindset that it competes for titles annually. During his first two years on the job, Alabama made the playoff, won a playoff game on the road, and played in the SEC Championship a season ago, not to mention being the first team out of the playoff field two years ago. What DeBoer's current recruiting philosophy tells us is every addition will be so very calculated.

Ultimately, Alabama may have had to recruit this way anyway because of the stance the athletic department as a whole has on NIL. While other SEC teams like Texas and Texas A&M will spend like there is no tomorrow, there are the Alabamas and Georgias of the world who must carefully pick and choose who comes to their school. They still have to win anyway, but DeBoer's philosophy fits the bill.

How DeBoer conducted himself at the podium in Destin proves this officially and undeniably his team.
