If one thing was obvious at the conclusion of Alabama's QB competition, it was that it was not an easy decision for Kalen DeBoer and his staff. In fact, DeBoer clearly agonized over it.
He loves Austin Mack. There's a loyalty there that is human nature to want to reward. Mack signed with DeBoer when he was the head coach at Washington, and then followed him to Tuscaloosa when DeBoer got the Alabama job.
He firmly believes that he can win a lot of games with Mack piloting the offense.
But he also knows that Keelon Russell is the better player, and the guy who immediately raises the ceiling for the Crimson Tide in 2026.
But what sets DeBoer apart from other coaches who have been in the same position is how much the decision weighed on him. You could tell based on his interview with Yea-Alabama in the aftermath that it was a decision that was incredibly difficult. You could also see it in his words after Monday's practice:
“This guy is a phenomenal quarterback. To me, he didn’t lose anything. He didn’t fail in any way," DeBoer said about Mack. ..."This is tough stuff. This is grown-man stuff. He’s never fallen off; he’s never wavered about how he’s going to approach things. He’s a pro. He loves this team."
DeBoer clearly loves his players. And his players clearly love him, regardless of the perception nationally or of the fanbase. This is the latest example and further shows why he's had so much success in retaining his players.

Of DeBoer's two full recruiting classes at Alabama, Micah DeBose is the only player to transfer away so far. He left a crowded group of offensive linemen in Tuscaloosa for Nashville and appears set to start right away for Vanderbilt.
That's the entire list. Just DeBose.
Of course, there will be more to come. Mack is probably one of them. But it's that loyalty and that love that have allowed him to retain so much top talent in Tuscaloosa. Of course, Alabama has lost some players to the portal in both offseasons under DeBoer, but the majority of guys who left were former Nick Saban recruits.
The guys DeBoer and Courtney Morgan have hand-picked have largely stayed put.
Convincing Mack to return for 2026 when he could have sought an easier path to a starting job was a huge win for Alabama. Now, DeBoer and company have the ultimate luxury with one of the nation's top backup quarterbacks waiting in the wings if anything happens to Russell.
That wouldn't be the case at most places. Under most coaches, Mack would have left already, especially with the talent that Alabama has accumulated at the QB position via high school classes.
Mack is undoubtedly disappointed that he didn't win the job. But he trusted the process with DeBoer and knows his development will continue in the shadows. He'll keep getting ready in case his number is ultimately called, and his moment is coming down the road, even if that's somewhere other than Tuscaloosa.
And while DeBoer still has much to prove when it comes to winning at the level that Alabama fans expect, it is players like Mack who bring the biggest cause for future optimism.
