Say what you want about Kalen DeBoer's recruiting prowess, but the Alabama head coach knows quarterbacks. DeBoer just picked up another blue-chip signal-caller on Friday in the form of 2028 four-star Kingston Preyear. The rising junior from Alexander City picked the Crimson Tide over the Florida Gators and the Vanderbilt Commodores for his four-star commitment. It was an easy choice.

As expected, On3/Rivals' Hayes Fawcett was all over the news of Preyear commiting to Alabama.

With his four-star commitment, here is who DeBoer has recruited to come play for Alabama thus far.

  • 2025: 5-star Keelon Russell
  • 2026: 5-star Jett Thomalla and 4-star Tayden-Evan Kaawa
  • 2027: 5-star Elijah Haven and 4-star Trent Seaborn
  • 2028: 4-star Kingston Preyear and 3-star Charles Scott Jr.

Keelon Russell will be duking it out with former Washington transfer Austin Mack for the starting job. While Jett Thomalla and Tayden-Evan Kaawa will certainly serve as backups during their first seasons on campus, it will not be long before Elijah Haven and Trent Seaborn make their way to Tuscaloosa in 2027. Preayer is now part of the same Alabama 2028 recruiting class that features Charles Scott Jr.

This all goes to show just how proficient DeBoer is at recruiting the game's most important position.

Kalen DeBoer lands another marquee quarterback in Kingston Preayear

Preyear picked Alabama over Florida and Vanderbilt, based DeBoer and his staff's ability to develop the quarterback position. He told On3's Chad Simmons that "they can develop the crap out of a quarterback." Preyear has seen from afar what DeBoer and his staff have done with the likes of Ty Simpson, Jalen Milroe, Michael Penix Jr., and Jake Haener. All four were drafted into the NFL recently.

Of course, nothing is given, and competition is everything in a DeBoer quarterback room. While Penix and Haener's talent jumped off the page at their respective schools, Milroe had to earn his keep during a coaching regime change. He held his own over Simpson, who beat out Mack and Russell a season ago. Iron sharpens iron in the land of the Iron Bowl. Look for Preyear to be no different here.

The big question now is what will the Alabama quarterback room look like by the time Preyear finally arrives on campus. Mack will likely be gone after having exhausted his eligibility. Russell will firmly be an upperclassmen by the time Preyear enrolls. As far as Thomalla, Kaawa, Haven, and Seaborn are concerned, some may still be around, while others could transfer out. Scott is in his same class, too.

To tie a bow on this, Alabama is not going to sink in the coming years because of its quarterback room. In fact, it will probably be the position group that lifts up the entire offense. The ground game still needs work, as well as the offensive line needing to be totally revamped. At the very least, DeBoer seems to know what he is doing when evaluating the quarterback position the most. He cannot miss.

Only time will tell if Preyear will be able to climb up the Alabama depth chart and into the starting role.
