Alabama got really good news this week with the reclassification of elite guard Anderson Diaz, who was a composite 5-star in the 2027 class, who elected to reclass into the 2026 cycle and join the Crimson Tide immediately.

That increased Alabama's chances of making a deep NCAA Tournament run and competing at the top of the SEC as Nate Oats looks to win his third SEC Championship in Tuscaloosa.

But one of the teams that figures to be right in contention with Alabama and others at the top of the league got an even bigger addition that will make life more challenging for the Crimson Tide and everyone else.

Texas had already been having a tremendous offseason with some impressive Transfer Portal additions in Isaiah Johnson (Colorado), David Punch (TCU), and Elyjah Freeman (Auburn). The Longhorns already had one of the top high school recruits, too, in 5-star guard Austin Goosby.

Now, they just landed one of the top high school players in the country.

5-star forward Marcus Spears Jr., the son of former LSU defensive lineman turned ESPN analyst Marcus Spears, committed to Texas on Thursday. He also reclassified into the 2026 class and will join the Longhorns immediately. Spears was the No. 1 player in the 2027 class before he reclassified:

Texas will be a lot for Alabama to deal with after the addition of 5-star Marcus Spears Jr.

Texas was already projected to be one of the best teams in the country thanks to Sean Miller's work in the portal. His addition of Spears just took it to a whole new level.

Texas will have one of the deepest and most talented teams in college basketball next season.

It's not doomsday for Alabama or anything, but the path to the top of the SEC just got even more challenging. That's nothing new for Oats and the Crimson Tide, though. The SEC has taken a tremendous step forward in basketball in recent seasons, and that hasn't stopped Oats from consistently leading Alabama toward the top of the conference.

Texas is going to be a problem, however.

Miller has done quick work revitalizing the Longhorns' basketball program. The introduction of pay-for-play has had a lot to do with that. There may not be an athletic department in the country more robust in cash flow than the one in Austin.

Oats will undoubtedly have Alabama in the mix, but the latest addition for Texas probably has the 'Horns as the obvious preseason favorite to win the league.
