Kalen DeBoer has been a slow starter on the recruiting trail through his first two seasons at Alabama. However, this year, he’s made significant headway in the 2027 class, adding his fourth commit, three-star tight end Colt Lumpris, on Wednesday.
With the 6-foot-6 New Jersey native in tow, the 2027 class currently ranks 11th-best in the country. After choosing the Crimson Tide over Tennessee, Ohio State, Penn State, and others, Lumpris gave a quote that should have DeBoer’s staff confident that he’ll stick with the program through next year’s signing day.
“I went on my visit to Alabama last year, and as soon as I got there, it felt like home,” Lumpris told Brett Greenberg of Bama247. "I went through all of my checklist and 'Bama checked off every one. But I also want to be able to contribute to a program, and I can see myself contributing there. The team there felt like family when I was there."
Intriguing 3-star tight end Colt Lumpris appears locked in with Alabama after an early commitment
There’s plenty of time for things to change before the Early Signing Period for the 2027 class opens next December, but that doesn’t sound like a player who will be weighing other options between now and then. Assuming Lumpris stays locked in, he’s an intriguing foundational piece for Alabama’s 2027 class.
Lumpris joins four-star quarterback Trent Seaborn, four-star edge Jabarrius Garror, and three-star cornerback Nash Johnson. With Lumpris’s size at 6-foot-6, 225 pounds as a high school junior, he could continue to shoot up recruiting rankings throughout the summer circuit and his senior season.
He currently operates as an oversized receiver for The Lawrence School in New Jersey, but his frame should allow him to put on enough weight to be an impactful in-line tight end at the Power 4 level.
Alabama is young at the tight end position, at least behind senior Josh Cuevas. With Cuevas out for the SEC Championship Game, true freshman Kaleb Edwards played the bulk of the snaps, with fellow true freshman Jay Lindsey seeing the field for 11 offensive snaps as well.
The 2026 Alabama class features four-star tight end Mack Sutter, who is expected to make an immediate impact in Tuscaloosa. If Edwards, Lindsey, and Sutter all hit, the tight end room could be crowded in a hurry, but as it stands for the 2025 College Football Playoff, it’s a thin group behind Cuevas.
