Kalen DeBoer and Alabama's ability to host official visits have not been in doubt during his three summers at the helm of the Crimson Tide. The recruiting runs Alabama went on during the summer of 2024 and 2025 tell you all you need to know about it. Another one in 2026 appears to be on the precipice following a massive official visitor weekend.
The momentum for that annual summer recruiting run was started on Sunday when 4-star RB Nigel Newkirk out of Gainesville, Georgia, announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide while on his visit. Newkirk initially planned to wait until July to make his announcement and had visits set up with LSU, Ohio State, and Michigan in the aftermath of this trip to Tuscaloosa.
Those plans have now changed.
While Alabama was seen as the leader in the clubhouse for quite some time in Newkirk's recruitment, he was a priority for many staffs across the country. Winning out before he could take any other officials is a massive win for DeBoer and a testament to the recruiting machine in Tuscaloosa.
So, too, was the quote Newkirk's mom provided to 247's Brett Greenberg in the aftermath of her son's decision to commit to Alabama:
“We were trying to do it in July, but we got on that campus and it was a wrap," she said.
Menyuna Cooper told @Bama_247 in April that it would be a dream come true if her son committed to Alabama.

The Gainesville (Ga.) RB Nigel Newkirk made that happen…

Alabama has remained a force in high school recruiting under Kalen DeBoer
DeBoer has signed back-to-back Top 5 high school classes as Alabama's head coach, though that streak will likely come to an end this cycle. Not because the Crimson Tide is struggling on the recruiting trail. Far from it, actually. It's simply because Alabama has a pretty full roster as is, with only nine seniors. It'll be quality over quantity for DeBoer and the Tide in the 2027 class.
Alabama's priority for roster-building this next offseason will be roster retention and strategic portal additions. They may take as few as 15 high schoolers this time around.
But you can bet those 15 will be among the best in the nation, even if the rankings don't immediately reflect that.
Another feather in the cap for DeBoer and GM Courtney Morgan during their time in Tuscaloosa has been identifying overlooked talent. Think guys like London Simmons, who was a 3-star defensive lineman and earned a starting role for the Crimson Tide as a true freshman.
They've consistently done a good job of locking in on guys before they blow up. Keelon Russell is the best example of that. He was an unheralded 4-star committed to SMU when he flipped to Alabama before finishing the 2025 cycle as the No. 2 overall player in his class.
Newkirk is another example. Alabama cranked up the heat on him when he was a consensus 3-star recruit before he started blowing up, thanks to rushing for nearly 1500 yards on over eight yards per carry as a junior.
He's a consensus 4-star prospect now, but at No. 16 overall at his position in the 247 composite, he's still undervalued. Once he gets back on the field for his senior season, expect that to change.
