Don't be looking for an Alabama Football Depth Chart on Monday
By Ronald Evans
For Alabama Crimson Tide fans, this is an unofficial update on the first Official Alabama Football Depth Chart for the 2024 season. The update is 'don't be looking for one on Monday' of Game Week. Based On Kalen DeBoer's recent comments, Friday might be a better guess. Or maybe Saturday morning.
DeBoer was somewhat vague when asked about a depth chart. Not irritated as Alabama fans had come to expect when Nick Saban was asked; but more like he was still working through various player rotations based on offensive and defensive schemes to be emphasized on a per-game basis. DeBoer did indicate around 90% of the Crimson Tide's first-unit players are already known. It is presumed he meant known by not just the staff, but the players as well. DeBoer said, "We'll probably do something where it's public at some point throughout the week."
The remaining 10% of the first-unit players and likely a much larger percentage of second-unit players may not become locked in for two of three games (or longer). In recent weeks, a growing take from national college football pundits is that Alabama will be a different team in the last half or third of the season. Different; as in much better than the Crimson Tide will be in September. Such progress and the player development that spurs it could mean starters and key backups at certain positions will be fluid for a while.
Main Alabama Football Depth Chart Questions
When the first Depth Chart comes out, there is a high probability that right tackle and one of the cornerback slots will be an 'or' situation. Wilkin Formby or Elijah Pruitt at right tackle. Zabien Brown or DaShawn Jones (or maybe a surprise) at one of the corners.
Admittedly a Crimson-tinted take is that at some positions, the Crimson Tide is so loaded with talented depth that 'first-unit' could be almost meaningless.
