Rob Vaughn has Alabama baseball set up with friendliest path to Omaha in 2 decades

It has been 27 years since Alabama baseball, once an Omaha mainstay in the 1990s, last reached the College World Series.

That streak could end this year, with Rob Vaughn leading the Crimson Tide to an exceptional standing in the NCAA Tournament, providing the program with its best path to Omaha in 20 years.

For the first time since 2006, Alabama is a national seed in the NCAA Tournament. And for just the third time in program history since the tournament expanded to 64 teams, Alabama is in line to host a Super Regional at The Joe if it can take care of business in the Regional round.

Alabama learned of its fate as a Regional host on Sunday night, of which there was little surprise. The Crimson Tide had long since wrapped that up. But being a Top 8 seed was up in the air, particularly after a disappointing showing in Hoover in a run-rule loss to Florida in the SEC Tournament.

But on Monday, the Tide was officially announced as the No. 7 overall seed in the tournament.

Alabama baseball could host a Super Regional for the first time since 2006

The Tuscaloosa Regional gets started on Friday and this is how it broke down for Vaughn's club:

1. Alabama
2. Oklahoma State
3. USC Upstate
4. Alabama State

Alabama will open the Regional on Friday against Alabama State at 6 pm CT. The Crimson Tide faced off against the Hornets twice during the regular season, earning a 2-1 win in Tuscaloosa in February and a 13-4 win in Montgomery in March.

The biggest threat to Alabama in the Regional is 2-seeded Oklahoma State out of the Big 12. The Pokes went 37-20 overall and 18-12 in conference play.

As the 7-seed, Alabama is paired with the Tallahassee Regional for Supers. If the Crimson Tide wins the Regional, they would host the winner of the Tallahassee Regional in the Supers. Florida State is the 10-seed, joined at home by Coastal Carolina, Northern Illinois, and St. John's.

This is the third consecutive season Vaughn has led Alabama to the NCAA Tournament, but the first time they've hosted a Regional. The Tide hosted a Regional in 2023 under Jason Jackson as the interim coach, winning it and advancing to face Wake Forest on the road in the Supers, where they ultimately lost.

Prior to that, the Crimson Tide last hosted a Regional in Tuscaloosa back in 2006. That was the last time Alabama hosted in the Supers, and they were the No. 4 overall seed in that tournament. Alabama fell to North Carolina in that round, coming up just short of the College World Series.

Alabama last made it to Omaha in 1999 as the No. 5 overall seed. Under Jim Wells, the Tide swept LSU in the Supers to get to the World Series. They finished in 4th place in Omaha after getting knocked out in the semifinals by the eventual national champion Miami Hurricanes.

Vaughn and Alabama won't have an easy path to get there, but the best you can hope for is hosting all the way through. Alabama put itself in position to do just that. Advancing to the College World Series would be further proof of concept for what Vaughn is building in Tuscaloosa.
