Evidently, President Donald Trump was just as blown away by Ryan Williams' game-winning touchdown to beat Georgia last season as the rest of us.
According to Williams, in the aftermath of his stunning, sensational touchdown catch and run in the fourth quarter against Georgia, his phone lit up with a FaceTime call from none other than the President of the United States.
Williams told the story on the I Am an Athlete Podcast.
The then-17-year-old freshman turned now-18-year-old sophomore had to be stunned to see who was on the other end of the call. It was already a whirlwind moment for a kid who was not even a legal adult when he made one of the top plays of the college football season in a massive moment; it became even bigger knowing what he did got the attention of the most powerful man in the country.
Ryan Williams has even more in store for a sophomore encore
Williams was terrific as a true freshman, particularly one who should have been a high school senior. He finished the year with 48 catches for 865 yards and 10 total touchdowns. According to the now sensational sophomore, that was nothing in comparison to what he has in store for an encore.
Williams figures to be the focal point of an Alabama offense that looks a lot more like the Kalen DeBoer offense that led Washington to the National Championship Game in 2023. With Ty Simpson at the helm, and a revamped and improved WR room around him, Williams could be in line for a prolific season that puts him in Biletnikoff, All-American, and perhaps even Heisman Trophy consideration.
And who knows, maybe he'll get another call from the President this year. Alabama will make the trip to Athens to battle Georgia at the end of September in a game that will undoubtedly be one of the biggest regular-season games of the season, as it always is when the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs meet on the gridiron.
President Trump has made it a habit of popping up at big college football games over the years, particularly those involving Alabama. If he makes the trek to Athens, here's hoping he gets to see Alabama do what it usually does against Georgia: win.
