Ty Simpson continues Alabama's unprecedented NFL Draft success at the QB position

Alabama has become an NFL pipeline at the quarterback position.

The moment Ty Simpson heard his name called at pick No. 13 overall by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2026 NFL Draft wasn't just a surprise pick—it was the latest proof that Alabama football has quietly turned quarterback development into one of the most reliable pipelines in college football.

For years, the narrative around the Crimson Tide centered on dominant defenses, elite receivers, and NFL-ready linemen in the trenches. But over the past half-decade, that identity has expanded. Alabama isn't just producing quarterbacks—it's producing high-upside, system-ready, pro-caliber signal callers at a historic pace. Simpson's selection is the latest evidence of this truth as the one-year starter now becomes the sixth consecutive Tide quarterback to be drafted in the first three rounds, joining Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones, Bryce Young, and Jalen Milroe.

Alabama football is producing signal callers at an historic pace

That kind of consistency is rare anywhere in college football—especially at a position that historically hasn't defined Alabama's NFL legacy. In fact, before this modern run, the Tide had relatively few quarterbacks taken at the top of the draft in the post-1970 era. What makes this even more impressive for Alabama isn't just the draft positions—it's the development arcs. Simpson is the latest example.

Unlike many first-round quarterbacks who build their resumes over multiple seasons, Simpson didn't arrive as the day 1 starter after being recruited by Nick Saban as a 5-star recruit from Martin, Tennessee. He waited his turn, started only 15-games, and still developed as a first-round talent. It's a pattern Alabama has quietly mastered: not just producing quarterbacks, but preparing them—efficiently—for the next level.

Simpson's special moment points evolution in Tuscaloosa. Because now, Alabama isn't just developing anymore—they're standardizing the position. What once felt like a revolving door of projections has become a consistent system of preparation, where every passer enters a defined pipeline and is now expected to be NFL-ready by the time they leave.

And now, under Kalen DeBoer, that pipeline continues. The Crimson Tide's quarterback room already includes growing talent like Keelon Russell, Austin Mack, Jett Thomalla, Tayden Kaawa, and 2027 Thompson High 4-star commit Trent Seaborn, with the potential to add fellow 2027 5-star QB Elijah Haven, among others. Each brings a different layer upside, but all exist within the same reality of potentially being next in line to hear their names called by NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell on draft night in early rounds in the coming years.
