Unlike rivals who claim it falsely, Alabama really is an 'Everything School'

With the recent sustained success on the hardwood, many think that the power has shifted from football, with Alabama athletics now being labeled a 'basketball school'. But little do people know, Crimson Tide athletics is the 'standard' and cream of the crop in multiple fields

Throughout history, the most powerful empires were never defined by a single city, army, or moment — they were often defined by their ability to expand without losing the power of their foundation. For example, the Roman Empire's expansion didn't abandon Rome as it stretched across continents; it reinforced its capital while adding new provinces that strengthened the whole. The British Empire's expansion didn't trade influence in one region for another; it built a network so vast that its power was felt everywhere at once.

Now in 2026, and in recent years past, Alabama athletics have completely embodied this exact blueprint. This proof has never been clearer than it is right now in Crimson Tide's modern era.

But in today's social media-driven landscape, that expansion is sparking a new conversation. One fueled by Alabama Men's basketball head coach Nate Oats leading the Tide to their fourth consecutive Sweet 16 appearance in March Madness. Which brings up a question even FanDuel Sportsbook couldn't ignore:

Is Alabama now a basketball school?

This question has led to many Alabama fans and those on the outside looking in having mixed reactions. Some say "True", pointing to the men's basketball team's sustained success, consistent deep postseason runs, and the growing buzz around the program as evidence that Alabama is no longer just a football school. Others say "false", emphasizing that football remains the crown jewel of Alabama athletics, viewing basketball as a rising star — but not the identity of the school.

In my opinion, both perspectives are true, and those asking this question miss the bigger picture: Alabama is no longer just one thing. Since College Football 7-time national champion Nick Saban handed over the reins to Kalen DeBoer in 2024, Alabama football has remained the engine of the university, but the athletic department as a whole has become a multi-lane highway that nobody in the NCAA can match across the board. This point is proven by the fact that Alabama was the only school in the country to make the College Football Playoff and Men’s Basketball Sweet 16 in 2025-26.

On top of that, women's basketball has steadily carved out its own legacy under head coach Kristy Curry. And on the diamond, baseball has also emerged as a national contender, producing MLB-caliber talent and getting into the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, softball continues to cement itself as one of the SEC's premier programs, having multiple World Series appearances and a national title.

Track and field also finds its dominance, from sprints to distance, jumps to throws. Both Alabama men's and women's squads have consistently excelled at the conference and national level. Not to mention, adding in other sports like golf and gymnastics, among others, all of which are consistently being nationally recognized. Which is why to me, the profile is clear: Alabama isn't a program shifting identities, it's a growing example of one expanding its empire.

Taken together, these programs illustrate a school that should be defined by a single sport or season. At Alabama, excellence in all things isn't an exception; it's the expectation. Meaning that the script "A" isn't just dominant in moments; they're constructed to dominate everywhere. It's built into the very blueprint of the logo and program, making the Tide the nation's ultimate 'Everything School'.
