The 2026 Alabama football team will not follow the formula for success Indiana used in 2025. Last season's National Champions were often described as "men playing against teenagers." The description was not always valid. The Miami team the Hoosiers beat for the national title was older.
Based on the players' average age, the 2026 Alabama football roster will be one of college football's youngest. But the Crimson Tide's youth and the inexperience that goes with it should not be alarming.
RotoWire calculated the average age on 2026 college football rosters as 20.3 years. Alabama is tied for No. 117 among all FBS teams at 20.04 years. LSU, ranked No. 103, is not much older at 20.12. Four SEC teams will be younger than Alabama: Texas A&M, 20.01 (tied at No. 122); Tennessee, 19.92 (tied at No. 129); Texas, 19.86 (tied at No. 129); and the youngest team in college football will be Georgia at 19.81 years.
2026 Alabama Crimson Tide - Too Young ?
A popular theme for college football pundits is that Alabama will be too inexperienced to make the Playoff. That is not close to being true on the defensive side of the ball. If Terrance Green and QB Reese start, only one projected defensive starter, Dijon Lee, will have less than 2 years of college football experience. Seven of the Crimson Tide's projected defensive starters will be fourth, fifth, or sixth-year players.
There will be young and less experienced players on offense. As many as seven projected starters will be second-year players. Two of the seven, Michael Caroll and Lotzieir Brooks, gained plenty of experience last season.
There will be growing pains for the Crimson Tide offense. Probable starters Jackson Lloyd, Keelon Russell, Kaleb Edwards, and Derek Meadows need meaningful game reps to realize their potential. Another possible starter, Jayvin James, is a fourth-year player and had only 18 starts with previous programs. Two freshmen are expected to contribute in rotational roles, running back EJ Crowell and receiver Cederian Morgan.
By the time Alabama plays Georgia, the young and inexperienced Alabama players will have played five 2026 games. Learning curves will remain, but they should be significantly flattened.
