Crimson Tide Report: Resignation and Retirement
Two important (and long awaited, according to many) people that both affect the Crimson Tide have decided to leave their current positions. In the past 24 hours, we’ve learned of the resignation of Alabama baseball head coach Mitch Gaspard and CBS football analyst Verne Lundquist.

Many of the Crimson Tide faithful have been calling for Mitch Gaspard’s head on a platter following another abysmal baseball season, and yesterday, they got their wish. Gaspard resigned as head coach of the Tide after 7 seasons in Tuscaloosa.
“Last Friday afternoon, I notified our Director of Athletics, Bill Battle, of my intention to resign as head baseball coach at The University of Alabama at the conclusion of this season,” Mitch Gaspard said. “It’s a decision that has not been an easy one, but something that I have been considering for a while now.”
Gaspard finished his career with the Crimson Tide with a 234-193 (57%) record.
Several names have already been tossed around to fill the vacancy. Houston head coach Todd Whitting, Tulane HC David Pierce, and LSU hitting coach Cannizaro have all been brought up as potential replacements for the Tide. The new Crimson Tide head baseball coach will likely be chosen in a few weeks to stay competitive in recruiting.

One announcement that doesn’t directly affect the University of Alabama but will certainly make millions of Tide fans happy is that CBS football analyst Verne Lundquist announced that he will be retiring following the 2016 season. Sadly, this does mean that we have another season of the Dynamic Duo known as “Verne and Gary”, which pairs Lundquist with fellow ding-dong Gary Danielson.
I tried to find a YouTube video to put here so everyone could laugh at the ridiculousness that is the play-by-play and color commentary of both CBS analysts, but there weren’t any fit for publishing. You’re welcome to browse on your own if you wish…there’s plenty to choose from.
Crimson Tide fans generally despise the pair, known for pretty much muddling through everything and never giving Alabama any credit. Verne and Gary have mixed up players’ names, incorrectly identified match-ups, and thrown out horribly wrong statistics.
They have been the subject of many a hilarious meme, and even have a fake Twitter account that was created in their honor. Often compared to the old men Hecklers from the Muppet Show, Verne and Gary have taken on a life of their own. Most Alabama fans groan when they hear that a game will be televised on CBS because it means we will be forced to either listen to Dumb and Dumber for three hours, or put the TV on mute and just do without any commentary at all. We’d be thrilled if the television broadcast wasn’t always about eight seconds behind real-time, because then we could listen to Eli Gold give all the Crimson Tide commentary we’d ever need.
I wish I could say we’ll miss ol’ Verne, but…we probably won’t. The Crimson Tide will definitely hang with you one more season though. Good luck in retirement, Verne Sunkist.
