Crimson Tide Erases 21 Point Deficit to Beat Ole Miss

The Alabama Crimson Tide snapped the Ole Miss Rebels’ two-game winning streak over them with a 48-43 come from behind win on Saturday.

The Crimson Tide has restored order over their neighbors to the west, the Ole Miss Rebels.

For much of the first half of the game, Alabama fans were on pins and needles seeing the Tide down 24-3 with just over two minutes left in the first half. The Tide scored 24 points before the Rebels would see their next score.

Ole Miss got off to a quick start with the first drive of the game with quarterback Chad Kelly going 3-for-4 for 47 yards. Running back Akeem Judd gave the Rebels the 7-0 lead with the run from 23 yards out. The Tide followed driving the ball 61 yards into Ole Miss territory but Jalen Hurts overthrew tight end Hale Hentges in the endzone for six and had to settle for the field goal.

Rebels’ field goal kicker Gary Wunderlich added three to push the Rebel lead back out to seven just before the start of the second quarter.

In just over two minutes time, Ole Miss would score 14 to push their lead out to 24-3 with 2:47 left in the first half. Kelly found Evan Engram for a 63-yard touchdown strike for the first six and the Rebels’ defense added the next score. On second and seven from his own 44, Hurts was rocked by Marquis Haynes on a missed targeting call by the refs. The hit caused him to cough up the fumble and sent John Youngblood rumbling for the score.

Hurts came right back in for the next drive, still cool, calm and collected. The Tide’s drive started at midfield with Hurts hitting Calvin Ridley for 22 yards and he followed that up with 22 of his own using his legs. Ridley finished off the three-play drive with a six-yard run for the touchdown. After forcing a three and out for Ole Miss, Eddie Jackson fielded the punt and took it 85 yards to the house to make the score 24-17 just before halftime.

The Crimson Tide finally knotted the game up back up at 24 in the third when Kelly suffered a big hit courtesy of Ryan Anderson which resulted in a fumble and score from defensive tackle Daron Payne. Adam Griffith gave the Tide their first lead of the ball game with 6:03 left in the third with a 30-yard field goal. Ole Miss answered with one of their own on the next drive from 18 out.

Following the field goal from Ole Miss and on the second play of the drive, Tide running back Damien Harris ran for a monstrous gain of 67, down to the Rebels one and a half yard line. Bo Scarbrough punched it in over the top to give Alabama the seven-point lead.

After another field goal for the Rebels, Hurts added 54 rushing yards to his total to set up Harris for a rushing touchdown from a yard out to make the score 41-30 midway through the fourth. Jonathan Allen extended the Tide lead to 18, taking an 85-yard interception to the house.

Ole Miss, not going down without a fight, pulled to within five points of the Crimson Tide. Kelly pieced together a 78-yard drive to close the gap and followed an onside kick recovery with a 37-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown.

Hurts finished the day 19-for-31 with 158 yards of passing and led rushing with 146 yards on 16 carries. Harris finished just behind him with 144 on 15 carries with one touchdown. Ridley led the Tide receiving with eight catches for 81 yards.

Kelly had a big day for the Rebels with 421 yards on 26 completions 41 attempts and three touchdowns. Ingram led receiving for Ole Miss with nine catches for 138 yards and one touchdown.
