Alabama Softball put in a long day of work Sunday when the rubber match against Missouri went into extra innings. In the end, it was Missouri who ended up on top to take the series, 2 games to 1.

Alabama softball moved to 32-6 overall in 2017 and 8-4 in SEC play. Junior Alexis Osorio was handed the loss moving her to 16-4. Missouri now has a 20-14 overall record and 3-5 in the conference. Cheyenne Baxter notched the win for the Tigers, moving her record to 8-2.

The game was quiet until the 4th. Alabama scored on a RBI single from Marissa Runyon. Missouri followed with a solo home run to make it 1-1. In the next inning, Alabama got two runs off a Reagan Dykes double.

Missouri answered again with a two-run home run to make it 3-3. That score would hold to send the series-deciding game to extra innings.

Extra! Extra! Innings!

After a quiet seventh inning, Alabama got two on base in the eighth off a single and an error. In the recurring theme for the season, Alabama softball left the two runners stranded. Missouri followed with a 1-2-3 inning to send it to the ninth.

More from Bama Hammer

Alabama went 1-2-3 in their half of the ninth inning. Osorio walked the first two Missouri batters off eight straight balls. After a swinging strikeout, the winning run was on third. A walk-off base hit by Missouri’s Kolby Romaine sealed the game for the Tigers 4-3.

Despite the disappointing result, this is one of Alabama’s better losses this season. The loss was against a team not exactly in the cream of the crop of the SEC. But Alabama softball exhibited actual fight on Sunday.

Too many times this season, we’ve seen Alabama lose and lose badly. Last week, we recapped a game where Alabama completely collapsed against South Carolina.

Alabama put up a much better effort on both sides of the ball Sunday. The offense got some great hits and put themselves in a position to win.

Osorio had tough situations that she overcame to keep Alabama softball in the battle. It was just not quite enough to stop a tenacious Missouri team, who are better than their record.

Alabama has a midweek game against Lipscomb in Florence, AL at 6pm. That’s before a big series next weekend against LSU at Rhodes Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Games will be at 6:30pm, 8pm and 2pm, respectively. Saturday’s game will be on SEC Network, Sunday’s game on ESPN2.
