Alabama remains No. 1 in the Associated Press and Amway Coaches polls this week following its 24-10 win over LSU last Saturday. Mississippi State sits at No. 18 in both polls coming off a 34-23 win over UMass. The Crimson Tide was ranked second the College Football Playoff rankings while the Bulldogs while the Bulldogs were tabbed 16th overall.

Series Notes

"Alabama and Mississippi State will meet for the 102nd time on Saturday. The Crimson Tide leads the all-time series, 81-17-3 (79-18-3 after vacations and forfeits), and won last year’s meeting, 51-3, in Tuscaloosa. The Tide has played more games against Mississippi State than any other opponent and the series, which began in 1896, is the fifth-oldest in UA history. Alabama has won the last nine meetings between the two schools, including a 31-6 win in the Tide’s last visit to Starkville in 2015."

Alabama head coach Nick Saban is 14-1 in his career against State, including a 9-1 mark at Alabama. Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen is 0-8 all-time against the Crimson Tide.

  • MSU outscored UMass 21-3 in the second half en route to a 34-23 win on Saturday. Nick Fitzgerald (135) and Aeris Williams (114) went over 100 yards rushing in the same game for the third time this season, while the Bulldogs returned an interception (J.T. Gray, 58 yards) for a touchdown for the third straight game. Deddrick Thomas put the game out of reach with an 83-yard punt return TD, the fifth-longest return in MSU history and longest since 1998.
  • State is bowl eligible for a school-record eighth straight year. Prior to Dan Mullen’s arrival, the school record for consecutive bowl appearances was three from 1998-2000. MSU is one of five SEC teams who have been to a bowl every season this decade (Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Texas A&M the others).
  • Saturday’s game matches the SEC West’s two winningest teams since 2014: Alabama (49), MSU (32).
