Alabama faces uneasy wait after 5-star WR Monshun Sales sets commitment date

5-star Monshun Sales is ready to make his commitment, and there's little optimism that Alabama will be the pick.

At one point, it seemed like a slam dunk that 5-star WR Monshun Sales was going to pick Alabama.

A lifelong fan of the Crimson Tide who was born in Alabama before moving to Indiana, Sales' recruitment appeared to be set up on a tee for Kalen DeBoer.

But in this era of recruiting, nothing is ever a slam dunk. Not with the amount of money that is being thrown around for players, particularly those of Sales' caliber.

The long-time favorite, Alabama's optimism began to wane in the spring with Indiana seemingly surging ahead in his recruitment. His official visit to Tuscaloosa at the end of May seemed to draw Alabama back into a neck-and-neck battle with the Hoosiers.

But with his commitment date on the horizon, the majority of experts believe Alabama is on the outside looking in, with his decision likely coming down to Indiana and Texas.

The 2027 class has been a brutal cycle for Alabama fans. Sales committing elsewhere would be the final insult.

The date for that bandage to be ripped off his now set.

5-star WR Monshun Sales sets commitment date of July 17th with Alabama's confidence waning

Sales will announce his commitment on Friday, July 17th at 11am CT live on the Pat McAfee Show. He announced the news himself on his Twitter account:

Sales technically has a final group of five schools, with Alabama joined by Indiana, Texas, Ohio State, and LSU. But it feels like the race is between the Hoosiers and Longhorns, with both schools willing to commit serious financial resources to try to land one of the top high school players in the country.

It'll be a disappointing blow if and when Sales makes his choice of a school not named Alabama. It'll be even more disappointing if that choice is Texas, considering the number of head-to-head battles the Crimson Tide has recently lost in recruiting to the Longhorns due to the deeper pockets in Austin.

Alabama's recent addition of 4-star WR Osani Gayles will lessen the sting of Sales likely going elsewhere. Gayles is more than just a consolation prize and is one of the top receivers in the 2027 class in his own right.

But this one will sting for a while nonetheless.

The good news is that disappointment of the 2027 class appears to be just a blip on the radar for Alabama fans. DeBoer and his staff have gotten off to a hot start in the 2028 cycle. After the commitment of 4-star QB Kingston Preyear on Friday, the Crimson Tide currently holds the No. 1 class for 2028.
