Alabama looking to fend off LSU and others for JUCO CB Alius Mayo with commitment date set

Alabama's pursuit of one of the top junior college defensive backs in the 2027 recruiting cycle is entering its final stretch.

Four-star JUCO cornerback Alius Mayo announced Monday his plans to reveal his official commitment decision on August 2, setting the stage for a recruiting standoff that includes Alabama, LSU, Mississippi State, Cal, and several other finalists.

At 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, Mayo's combination of size, length, and experience has made him a priority target for multiple Power Four programs. This surge comes after registering 30 tackles, including one tackle for loss, five interceptions, and five pass breakups at Modesto Junior College during the 2025 season.

For Alabama, the upcoming decision represents an opportunity to continue building the future foundation of its secondary. The Crimson Tide have already landed their first defensive back commitment in the 2027 recruiting class with three-star cornerback Darrius White, but adding Mayo would give Kalen DeBoer and defensive backs coach Mo Linguist another talented piece at a position that remains one of the most important in the SEC.

Mayo received an official offer from the Tide on June 17 and stayed on campus from June 18-20. Following the trip, Mayo came away thoroughly impressed, praising Alabama's coaching staff in multiple interviews in the aftermath of the visit.

With Mayo's frame and growing relationship with the program, he definitely fits the familiar archetype that Linguist is building in Alabama's secondary—long, physical ballhawks with the versatility to compete at the highest level. His addition would serve as an underrated win and key building block in the Crimson Tide's 2027 recruiting class that has already seen its fair share of misses.

It'll be interesting to see whether Alabama can ultimately close the deal on one of the most intriguing junior college cornerbacks available, as DeBoer, Linguist, and the Crimson Tide staff will have to fend off a strong push from LSU—who also shares a rich history of defensive back development—along with the rest of Mayo's finalists ahead of his August 2 commitment.
