You've seen the narratives surrounding Alabama's so-called "disappointing" 2027 recruiting class. Some of that noise is due to a lack of key in-state talent staying home. As things stand, 4-star QB Trent Seaborn is the only in-state recruit ranked inside the Top 20 committed to the Crimson Tide.
Alabama is a national program, however, and doesn't recruit kids strictly because they grew up locally. This in-state class is weaker than many in recent years, at least on paper. That changes in the 2028 cycle, which is shaping up to be an elite group.
DeBoer and Alabama plan to be much more aggressive both in and out of the state in the 2028 cycle. They may be getting ready to get a jump start on the in-state crop with the state's top quarterback nearing a decision.
4-star QB Kingston Preyear from Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City has trimmed his list to a final three as he readies for an early decision. He's set to make his commitment announcement on July 10th, with Alabama, Florida, and Vanderbilt still alive:

Alabama a finalist for 4-star 2028 QB Kingston Preyear
Alabama is considered the favorite for Preyear ahead of his commitment date in two weeks. If he joins the Crimson Tide's class, he'll already be the second QB commitment for DeBoer in the 2028 class, joining 3-star Charles Scott, who pledged to Alabama at the beginning of May.
If both stick - and both in the 2027 class also hold - it would mark the third consecutive class in which Alabama signed multiple quarterbacks. Alabama added 5-star Jett Thomalla and 4-star Tayden-Evan Kaawa in the 2026 cycle, and currently holds commitments from 5-star Elijah Haven and 4-star Trent Seaborn in the 2027 class.
That's a solid strategy with the likelihood of transfers coming for some of the QBs with no path to playing time soon.
Preyear would be a key commitment to get the ball rolling for an impressive in-state group in 2028. As the rankings currently stand, the state of Alabama has seven Top 100 players in the 2028 class, and Alabama has high interest in most of them.
Preyear could be major advocate for the Crimson Tide in that cycle, helping to lure the other top in-state talent toward Tuscaloosa, too.
He's also just an incredible talent in his own right, anyway. Preyear is a 4-star recruit and currently the No. 44 overall player (No. 4 QB) in the class. He's a dual-threat at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, and he put up over 3500 total yards and 36 touchdowns as a sophomore at Benjamin Russell last season.
He would be an outstanding early addition for 2028, and his impact could go far beyond his own ability.
