Sometimes recruiting rankings don't tell the full story about a prospect. That's especially true for 3-star WR Majay Thompson out of Shelby, North Carolina. His ranking would lead you to believe that he's not the most coveted prospect. He's the No. 612 overall player and the No. 71 WR in the 2027 class, per the 247 composite.
Those rankings aren't an accurate reflection of his potential, however.
Thompson's recruitment has been a heavily contested affair between both Alabama and Georgia. Considering how good the Tide and Bulldogs have been in recruiting evaluations over the years, you can bet that if he's a priority for Kalen DeBoer and Kirby Smart, the kid can flat-out play.
Alabama looked to be in pretty good shape for Thompson. They targeted him before Georgia, extending an offer back in February. Georgia came in with their offer in April and then had the first crack at Thompson for an official visit in May. Coming out of the visit, the Bulldogs became a massive favorite on the On3/Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine.
Both Steve Wiltfong and Chad Simmons logged predictions in favor of Georgia coming out of that visit, and they sit as a 91.7% favorite on Rivals. But Thompson didn't commit, and instead made the trip to Alabama as expected for this weekend, which means DeBoer and company have a chance to change the narrative.
Alabama getting its shot with Majay Thompson despite Georgia's status as the favorite
Thompson is a 6-foot, 186-pound speedster from North Carolina. He had a strong junior season a year ago, putting up 865 yards and 13 touchdowns as a receiver. He also returned a punt for a touchdown.
Thompson was one of the class's best-kept secrets until the Alabama offer came in February. Up to that point, his only Power Four offers had come from Duke, Wake Forest, Michigan State, and Boston College. After the Bama offer, Florida, Virginia Tech, NC State, North Carolina, Georgia, West Virginia, Auburn, and Stanford all extended offers.
It's wild how often that happens, isn't it?
It goes to show how good the Alabama staff is at evaluating prospects. They've found some diamonds in the rough in the last few cycles that prove it. Thompson could be another, though he could see a major rise in the updated rankings in the fall with how coveted he's proven to be on the recruiting trail.
While most feel this is an Alabama-Georgia battle, Thompson did take an official visit to Wake Forest last week, and currently has a trip scheduled to see Florida State next weekend after he departs Tuscaloosa. It won't surprise anyone if this is his last trip, though.
Alabama will make its pitch to land the North Carolina native, but coming into the weekend, they had some serious ground to make up on Georgia. The Bulldogs put their best foot forward on their visit, but DeBoer and his staff have frequently knocked these visits out of the park. They have a real chance to flip the script on Georgia this weekend, which would be another major head-to-head win for DeBoer over Smart on the trail.
