Kalen DeBoer’s hidden-gem hunt has led Alabama to an unheralded Texas State commit

It's well known at this point that Alabama isn't going to break the bank for the 2027 recruiting class. The Crimson Tide is prioritizing roster retention and then supplementing with the Transfer Portal after signing back-to-back elite classes in 2025 and 2026.

The plan is to spend big again on the 2028 class, and Alabama currently sits at No. 1 in the composite rankings.

But for 2027, Kalen DeBoer and GM Courtney Morgan are bargain shopping. That's not necessarily a bad thing. This staff has proven adept at finding hidden gems that others overlook. You're going to see a great example of that on Saturday when 3-star RB Trae'shawn Brown makes his Alabama debut. Guys like Lotzeir Brooks and London Simmons from the 2025 cycle are good examples, too.

That's what makes Alabama's latest offer so intriguing.

3-star ATH Isaiah Reed announced an offer from Alabama on Friday, via his Twitter account:

Texas State commit Isaiah Reed announces offer from Alabama

Reed is listed as a RB on his 247 profile, but he's a two-way player in high school, and most project that he'll play linebacker at the next level. He's listed at 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, so he'll obviously need to bulk up to handle that position.

But Alabama isn't looking for immediate contributors for next season at linebacker. It has a talented group of young players at the position, and while they could lose a player or two to the portal, they should still have good depth there. That's especially true with the five-for-five rule in place that would allow Virginia Tech transfer Caleb Woodson to return for a fifth year of eligibility if he so chose.

Reed committed to Texas State back in June. His recruitment is picking up steam. The Texas native also holds offers from Houston and Baylor, and you can bet that now that Alabama is sniffing around, he's going to garner even more interest nationally.

Alabama's 2027 class ranks 42nd nationally in the composite rankings. They've landed a few high-profile commitments, namely QB Elijah Haven and WR Osani Gayles, but they've also already landed some under-recruited players whom they hope will outperform their rankings.

That includes 3-stars like RB Tai Phillips, CB Darrius White, WR Cedrick Simmons, and EDGE Tyler Younger. Perhaps next year's roster won't be littered with immediate contributors from the high school ranks, but some developmental pieces could become impact players in Tuscaloosa down the road.

Again, DeBoer and Morgan have earned the benefit of the doubt. Not everyone is going to be a hit, but they've done as well as anybody at identifying talent that the recruiting services have overlooked.

Perhaps Reed will prove to be another.
