After a position battle that took nearly the entire offseason, Alabama finally has a starting quarterback. The Crimson Tide recently named sophomore Keelon Russell as their starter, and expectations are immediately high for the promising playmaker.
Being the signal caller for an all-time great program like Alabama comes with a lot of pressure, and Russell was aware of that when he made the decision to attend the university. However, he’s now experiencing that pressure firsthand since he has been named the team’s starting quarterback.
On Wednesday, Russell was a topic on ESPN’s First Take, the most prominent debate show in sports, and the panelists were asked how much pressure is on the young quarterback. Former NFL player and Pitt star Louis Riddick vehemently said that, “I don’t think there’s a single player who has more pressure on him in college football this year.”
While that’s an incredibly strong statement about a first-time starter, who’s just a sophomore, Riddick argued that all eyes will be on Russell to get the Alabama offense to perform at a proficient level.

Keelon Russell is already under immense pressure after being named Alabama’s starter
Riddick is right in the sense that Alabama’s offense had a lot of issues last season, but it’s a big stretch to say that Russell is under more pressure than anyone. The young quarterback is really just getting his career rolling, and while expectations naturally come with being the Tide’s QB, Russell isn’t personally entering a make-or-break year like many others throughout the country are.
Nevertheless, he does have the responsibility of proving he’s the guy, early, or things will get loud. By all accounts, Russell has the right mentality to accept that responsibility, and he also has the necessary skill set to deliver on expectations. That’s why Alabama’s coaching staff feels comfortable rolling with him in what is a pressure-filled year for head coach Kalen Deboer, as Alabama has to get back into the championship mix during the 2026 season.
Russell will be a big part of that equation, but so will improvement in all the other areas that Riddick mentioned. Ryan Coleman-Williams needs to return to being the star that he’s capable of being, and the offensive line needs to consistently carve out rushing lanes. If both of those things happen, Keelon Russell should deliver on expectations.
