Ty Simpson's stellar preseason might leave Sean McVay little choice with Stetson Bennett

The Los Angeles Rams finished up their preseason schedule on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Chargers, and Sean McVay handed Ty Simpson his first preseason start. After coming off the bench in the first two games, Simpson led the charge right away for the Rams against the Chargers and acquitted himself nicely for a third straight game.

On Thursday, Simpson went 18-of-23 for 119 yards and a touchdown in the Rams' 20-18 win. His touchdown pass was one of the highlights of the preseason for the former Alabama QB:

That wrapped up Simpson's preseason with a stellar stat line across three games: 47-of-60 for 382 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. That was good for a QB Rating of 109.9. He was the most impressive rookie QB in the preseason, but was it enough to earn him the backup role in LA?

Reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford is firmly entrenched as the starting QB, and former Georgia signal-caller Stetson Bennett entered the preseason as the backup and did little to hurt his case. Bennett performed well in the two games he saw action in.

Carrying three quarterbacks isn't abnormal, but opening up another roster spot for a different area of need by only carrying two QBs is a nice luxury. After Thursday's game, Rams head coach Sean McVay remained mum on what Los Angeles was going to do.

"Obviously, we've got the reigning MVP of the league, and then we got two guys that we feel really good about," McVay said. "And if you say, 'hey, what does that really mean?' That's what it means. We feel really good about those two guys. Not pigeon-holing myself into any sort of decision other than I feel really good about Stetson Bennett, feel really good about Ty Simpson."

The Rams, like every other NFL team, have to cut their roster down to 53 by Sunday night. Simpson's spot on the 53-man roster is secured after being the No. 13 overall pick in the draft. Bennett is in no danger of being cut, either; he's played too well in the preseason, and there are too many QB-needy teams out there for that.

If anything, the Rams could look to try to maximize Bennett's value by trading him to a team where he could potentially compete for the starting job. The Atlanta Falcons have often been floated as a possibility with their obvious need at the position.

Regardless of what happens in the coming days, Simpson has quieted a lot of doubters. Many people questioned LA's decision to select Simpson with the 13th pick back in April. There aren't many people still questioning it after how terrific he looked in the preseason.

It might be a while before we get to see Simpson play again as he spends his rookie season on the bench, but the former Alabama QB appears to be on the path toward being a quality NFL starter down the road.
