TIDE REPORT: QB Race Wide Open, Tony Brown Injured At Fan Day

Well, it’s been one eventful weekend and sadly, it’s Monday as well. One plus is Monday brings another edition of the Tide Report to get you caught up on the major news happening in Alabama athletics.

Injury News: Tide fans got a scare on Saturday when Twitter rumors started flying about an injury to left tackle Cameron Robinson. They ranged from a broken bone in his foot to a leg amputation (that one didn’t really happen) and several other horrible outcomes. To everyone’s surprise, Robinson came walking into Fan Day without the use of crutches. Lieutenant Cam! You got new legs! Coach Saban addressed the media before the Fan Day activities and let everyone know that Robinson only had a sprain and it played during the open practice. Oh, Twitter rumor never fail to disappoint.

Cornerback Tony Brown left the field toward the end of Fan Day favoring his left shoulder after a hit. No news has come out as of yet. Of course, we probably won’t hear anything official until Saban’s next press conference.

Quarterback Race: If you expected to have some clarity after Sunday’s practice, I have bad news for you. Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin called the race for the starting quarterback wide open earlier during his press conference and it was easy to see what he was talking about. The two candidates that seemed to be fighting for the spot didn’t really stand out on Sunday according to all of the reports. Both David Cornwell and Jake Coker had some struggles with some interceptions as well as overthrows and under throws. Some of those interceptions can probably be attributed to a better secondary that some noted appeared to be better than past seasons, with a few passes broken up and closing on the ball really well. The bright spot is that the consensus thought that freshman Blake Barnett looked poised, although that wasn’t against the first-team defense.

Freshman Stepping Up: Cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick got some work with the first team and by the accounts of those there, he is looking the part. I also caught tweets rolling by on Twitter mentioning running back Damien Harris looking good. Wide receiver Calvin Ridley has also been turning some heads and got a few mentions on Sunday as well.
