3.5 positions Kalen DeBoer needs to secure next in Alabama 2027 recruiting class

The early foundation is set, but Kalen DeBoer and company still have major work ahead to fill key needs in Alabama's 2027 recruiting class

Alabama's 2027 recruiting class is off to a strategic start, with Kalen DeBoer and his staff already securing commitments at several key positions. The group is headlined by two of the nation's top signal callers in five-star quarterback Elijah Haven and four-star quarterback Trent Seaborn. The class also features four-star linebacker Kenneth Simon Jr., four-star running back Nigel Newkirk, three-star defensive lineman Avrian Pauley Jr., and three-star tight end Oakley Keegan.

More recently, Alabama added three-star tight end Michael Nbabuife and one of the nation's top kicking prospects in Luke Cody, strengthening an already well-rounded foundation. However, with the Crimson Tide currently sitting at No. 55 nationally in the 2027 recruiting rankings, there's still plenty of work to be done.

While this early haul gives Alabama quality pieces at multiple positions, several key areas remain unaddressed. And with DeBoer and his staff expected to take a quality-over-quantity approach in what is projected to be a smaller class, every remaining spot becomes increasingly valuable. The Tide currently holds eight total commitments, and if the staff ultimately signs a class in the 15-to-18 player range, nearly half of its projected spots are still available.

With that in mind, here are three positions of need Alabama should be prioritizing next as the 2027 cycle continues to take shape.

1.) Cornerback

If there's one position that stands out above the rest in terms of urgency for Alabama, in my opinion, it's cornerback. The Crimson Tide have yet to land a defensive back in this cycle, and securing an elite corner should be near the top of the staff's recruiting board moving forward. Two names that immediately stand out are five-star CB Hayden Stepp and three-star CB Darrius White.

Both prospects have already taken official visits to Tuscaloosa, and possess the length, athleticism, and upside Alabama traditionally covets at the position. Stepp is targeting a commitment date at the end of this month, after tours with Oregon, Cal, and Georgia. White has upcoming official visits with Georgia Tech and Cincinnati over the next two weeks prior to his July 4 commitment date.

Landing either would immediately fill Alabama's pressing need and provide an early cornerstone for the Crimson Tide secondary moving forward.

2.) Wide Receiver

The next area for Alabama to secure in the 2027 cycle is wide receiver. This position is headlined by major targets like five-star WR Monshun Sales, four-star WR Osani Gayles, and three-star WR Majay Thompson.

The Crimson Tide also have their sights set on a trio of pass catchers in four-star athlete Xavier Sabb, who is set to visit Tuscaloosa on June 9, as well as four-star WR Deshawn Hall, and three-star WR Cedrick Simmons, both of whom are scheduled to visit on June 12-14. The major pursuit mission obviously surrounds around acquiring Sales or Gayles, but adding the services of Thompson, Sabb, Hall or Simmons would still give Alabama valuable depth and versatility at the position. With multiple targets still yet to make an official pledge, this stretch could be pivotal in shaping how the Tide's receiver board comes together moving deeper into the cycle.

3.) Defensive Line

Defensive line also remains a key area for DeBoer and Alabama to address in the Tide's 2027 cycle, with interior and edge talent still being closely evaluated by the staff.

Two names on continuous watch are four-star edge rusher Antwan Jackson and four-star defensive lineman Mitchell Turner, both of whom have already taken official visits to Tuscaloosa last month. As Jackson and Turner each come off of trips to Oxford, Mississippi with Ole Miss this past weekend, both prospects remain key targets for Alabama as the staff looks to add long-term depth along the front and impact bodies in the trenches—an essential piece in rounding out the defensive class.

**Honorary Mention—Offensive Line**

Surprisingly enough, offensive line rounds out my list as an honorary mention. Alabama signed 11 total players with multiple years of remaining eligibility at the position via the programs 2026 signing class and transfer portal haul. Still, DeBoer and new offensive line coach Adrian Klemm have zeroed in on four-star interior offensive lineman Antonio Berry as a key target in the 2027 cycle.

Berry recently wrapped up an official visit with the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington this past weekend, adding another major program to his recruitment. With DeBoer and staff scheduled to meet with the 6-foot-5, 280-pound Tupelo, Mississippi native in Tuscaloosa on June 19-21, it'll be interesting to see if Alabama can land its first offensive lineman commit in its 2027 class.

With several key prospects all still in play to join Alabama's 2027 cycle, DeBoer and his staff will need to capitalize on this upcoming group of remaining targets. If they can do so, the Crimson Tide will have the foundation necessary to make a rapid climb in the national rankings and restore the elite recruiting momentum the program has been long known for.
